This coming Sunday March 11 is Mother’s Day for all the British moms out there. Just in case you’re leaving your shopping until the weekend, or you need a helping hand with ideas on what to buy, we are here to help. We’ve selected stores from around Shanghai and even added in our recommendations to really make it easy for you. And don’t worry, ‘moms the word,’ we won’t tell her these ideas came from us!
This museum tucked behind the Changle Lu lanehouses is home to a shop selling various types of hand-dyed Nankeen products. From tote bags (from RMB148) to collared shirts (from RMB685) and maxi dresses (RMB995), there’s bound to be something that every mom would love to receive.

With extensive showrooms in Puxi and Pudong, DLT Furniture has something for every home. Enjoy browsing through their larger items such as cabinets and sofas, and their impressive accessories will add a splash of color or design element to any room. Our recommendation would be a jewelry cabinet - coming in a range of colors and patterns, what’s not to love about having all your jewelry arranged and easy to find in a quality made solid-wood keepsake. Prices start at RMB2,140 for a small cabinet, and RMB3,380 for the large. DTL also stock items from The Shanghai Gift Company, so you can pick up candles and cards while you’re there.

The ‘go-to’ place to pick up a book for mom whether it’s a best-selling biography or a quality cookbook. Notably, Garden Books has a decent collection of Shanghai history books and street chronicles that’ll make amusing bedside reads or something for the coffee table. The bookstore’s own Chinese shanshui greeting cards are also unique and an elegant accompaniment to any gift you’ve already prepared.

While this non-toxic natural home care brand does specialize in cleaning products, we know that no mom wants to receive laundry powder on their special day. They do however stock a lovely range of hand soaps, and an extension on their personal care range is coming soon. Made with essential oils, if you can’t choose between the lemongrass, mint or lavender, then buy their trio box already packaged for mom (RMB150).

Twenty years on and designer Denise Huang’s shoe concept is still kicking and clacking. This boutique store sells hand-sewn silk heels and slippers that are elegant to behold and comfortable to wear. So, check mom’s shoe size and surprise her with a pair of these beautifully designed shoes. Our recommendation is this pair of swallow slippers (US127), which can be worn indoors or out.
