Shanghai Family Brunch Review: Hakkasan

Who says brunch with the kids can't be classy affair? Every weekend Hakkasan in Bund 18 convert one of their private dining rooms into a sofa area with soft floor, a screen showing cartoons and a big box full of toys, so little people have somewhere to escape boring adult conversation.

And who says a classy affair can't be affordable? Chinese recipes with contemporary influences is the name of the Hakkasan game, and they have two weekend brunch menus with optional add-ons, the Yum Cha and the Weekend Classic, both priced RMB228 with selected tea; RMB338 with tea, a signature cocktail, a glass of Champagne or wine; and RMB798 for the aforementioned but free flow Champagne and wine.

We opted for the Weekend Classic, a multi course feast, and kicked things off with The Hakka from their signature cocktail list, a refreshing blend of Ketel One vodka, sake, lychee juice, lime, coconut and passionfruit, which set us up for the Dim Sum Platter. Three dumplings: har gau, crab spinach dumpling and the shu mai, which originated as a cheaply purchased teahouse breakfast food sometime in between the Ming and Qing dynasties, but Hakkasan have indulgently added scallop to, helping seal the juiciness inside.

The Crispy Duck Salad with Pomelo, Pine Nut and Grapefruit was another standout from the openers. Next up, a delicious Double Boiled Superior Soup with Crab. There are four mains to choose from, and the delightfully sticky stir-fry Black Pepper Australian Angus Rib Eye and Spicy Prawn with Lily Bulb and Almond caught our eye. Stir-fry Wild Mushroom with Edamame and Jasmine Steamed Rice round off the savory section.

Sated, we still saved a little room for desert. Egg Custard Nest with vanilla custard, caramelized pastry and a zesty orange Sichuan sorbet does battle with Coconut Semifreddo with lime curd and coconut sorbet to finish the meal with a flourish.

We had wine which bumped up the bill slightly, but a family of three can enjoy all that for less than RMB500. And with impeccable service, stylish interiors and views over the Bund to Lujiazui, if you are looking for a truly classy experience, and all without breaking the bank, we could not recommend Hakkasan highly enough.
