Book Review: The Tencent Empire

By Peter Chen, 2019-01-17 05:59:03

The Tencent Empire (Chinese Version) is a biographical book written by Lin Jun, Zhang Yuzhou and published by CITIC Publishing House on 01 August 2009. Its English Version, translated by Denis Mair, was published by China Intercontinental Press in November 2013.

The book mainly tells the true story of Ma Huateng, one of the leaders of business community in China. It is also a good reading of business cases as how Ma was able to establish an internet company called Tencent, and how a dot-com operates internally in the real sense of the market.

In the internet field of China, Tencent is a model. It maintains the record as industry one in terms of its largest number of users, highest sales revenues, best earnings and top market capitalizations.

Starting as a developer of messaging software, in ten short years Ma Huateng steered Tencent into all phases needed for a dominant presence on the Chinese internet: from value-added wireless operations, games, portal and search operations to e-commerce, and third-party payments. With ease and aplomb, Ma made Tencent the patter-setter of China’s whole internet industry.
