Now, more than ever, vaccines have been highlighted due to the events that happened during the past year.  We have seen how individuals, as well as countries clamored for availability of vaccines.

Vaccines are born, as we now notice, when a significant and/or life threatening disease arises.  Vaccines are invented and put into place with the purpose of protecting the individual receiving it, as well as the community in which he is part of, what we call “herd immunity”.

Being a Pediatrician, I cannot stress enough the importance of vaccines…and these start from the moment a child is born.

You may have noticed that countries have different vaccine requirements. Some countries require a certain vaccine that another country might not require.  A certain disease may have been eliminated in a certain country, take for example Tuberculosis; other countries on the other hand still see Tuberculosis, that is why it is still part of their vaccination schedule.

Countries also differ in the timing of giving the same vaccine. This is all because of research. Experts of each country found out the most perfect timing for each vaccine. They have calculated, thru research, when is the most vulnerable time a child can possibly acquire a certain disease, thus, vaccination before the disease sets in is crucial.  This is Preventive Medicine.

In China, which vaccinations details should expat families pay attention to?

For us living in China, it is important that we follow the Chinese recommended vaccine schedule to protect our child from possible life threatening diseases. This may be a different schedule from what your country has, but the end result is the same. They will be able to complete the vaccines that is needed.

You might encounter vaccines that sounds new and is not given in your country. It is best to talk with your Health Provider regarding these vaccines so you, as a parent can be fully informed. Personally, I try to talk about these to parent/s a few months ahead so they can ask around and do their research.

Controversies with some vaccines—some parents are wary about this thought. Again, consult your Health Provider for explanations.

Vaccines in China—vaccine schedule in this country is quite different.  There are vaccines that can only be given one at a time, with an interval of one to two weeks depending on which district the clinic is located.  There are also some vaccines that can be given, two at the same time.  The Pediatric Nurse can help you surf through these schedules.

In summary, these are the important things to know about vaccines!

  1. Vaccines work. There are life threatening diseases that were eliminated thru vaccination.

  2. Vaccines do not make you sick.  The so called side effect of vaccine such as mild fever actually mean that the vaccine is working.

  3. It is not better to get immunity “naturally”.

  4. Vaccines do not contain toxic ingredients.

  5. Vaccines do not cause autism.

  6. The timing of vaccines is important.
