Brace Yourselves… It’s Officially Summer in Shanghai
As you’ve likely noticed, Shanghai has officially entered the summer season, reports Shine.
In the past few days, the temperature has gotten hotter and hotter. Yesterday, the mercury even soared to a sweltering 34.3 degrees Celsius (93.6 degrees Fahrenheit), which came very close to triggering a heat wave alert. Yesterday also marked the fifth consecutive day that the average temperature exceeded 22 degrees Celsius (71.6 degrees Celsius), which makes May 19 the official first day of summer.
Compared to last year, the arrival of summer came slightly late this year. In 2018, the city fell into the grip of summer on May 12. While the official first day of summer came a little bit later this year, it still came earlier than usual. The city usually welcomes the season on May 29. This may explain why a lot of netizens are having a tough time grappling with the news and grumbling they are not ready for the sizzling and sweaty days of summer.
“It is summer already?” commented one netizen. “I still remember the days when summer didn’t arrive until the end of June.”
“Will there be a lot of high temperature days?” worried another. “I can already foresee tons of red and orange alerts of heat wave on the way.”
If it’s any comfort, it will rain in Shanghai this weekend giving us a temporary reprieve from the current hot streak we are experiencing. As we reported earlier this week, the temperatures are estimated to be below 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) starting tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the arrival of summer also means Shanghai’s annual termite season has returned. The pesky insects are already invading houses – especially Shanghai’s older wooden houses – around the city and won’t dissipate until early July. It’s better to take precautions before these uninvited guests wreak havoc on your home.

Summer may have arrived but we are still weeks away from the really hot days. The plum season – the last defense between us and the truly scorching days – normally arrives in mid-June and ends in early July.
