The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau has announced today that the plum rain season has officially arrived, which means Shanghai will receive an increasing amount of rainfall starting this week, Kankanews reports.

After a week without rain, the temperature went rogue and surpassed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend. The smoldering and stuffy conditions will continue today.

However, things are going to get really wet as a result of the plum rain season. Expect downpours starting tonight. With a precipitation of 30-80 millimeters, tomorrow’s highest temperature is expected to pummel to 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). Meanwhile, the heavy rains will also be accompanied by strong winds and thunder.

The rain is predicted to last until Saturday. After a short break over the weekend, it will make a quick comeback next week. If it’s any comfort, the mercury will stay below 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Here’s a glimpse of the weather forecast for the following days (without a doubt, the forecast is dominated by rainy weather):

The coming of the plum rain season this year is surprising since last week experts predicted the season would come a bit late. It turns out the arrival date of the season this year coincides with the average date, June 17.

The plum rain season usually lasts for three weeks. After the rains subside, the city will welcome the notorious dog days of summer. Expect consecutive high-temperature days and typhoons.
