Zhabei Park, the oldest park in Jing’an district, reopened its eastern section to the public on Monday, reports Shine. The reopening comes after 10 months of renovations and upgrades.

Covering an area of 133,500 square meters, the park was originally the grave of Song Jiaoren, a Chinese republican revolutionary who was assassinated in 1913. Over the years, the space was expanded several times and eventually evolved into a public park perfect for people to rest and relax.

Zhabei Park has always been one of the most popular parks in Shanghai. As a four-star park, it receives nearly 10,000 visitors each day. However, multiple issues have emerged since its grand opening 73 years ago, including its awkward layout, lack of lighting and surveillance facilities, and noise pollution.

To elevate the quality of the historic park as well as present residents with better service, authorities decided to give the park an all-around renovation. Meanwhile, to ensure that locals and tourists can still visit the venue during the renovation, the project was divided into two parts: the western section and the eastern section.

The renovation mainly focused on the layout of the park. For example, the large performance square has been removed. In its place are several small squares. Each space is surrounded by Chinese-style fences and various plants to keep the noise to a minimum.

In addition, a series of convenience facilities have been added to the park, including family cubicles of toilets and hook shelves for those who come to the park to exercise. The children’s playground has also been given a complete facelift. Following the renovation, Zhabei Park was upgraded to the five-star park, the highest level in the system.
