As Shanghai enters zhongfu, the hottest part of sanfu, Shanghai officially reached the summer’s first high temperature day on Tuesday. Temperatures will continue to climb up to around 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) or above. Not only are residents attempting to keep themselves cool but zookeepers are doing everything possible to make sure the animals make it through this heat wave safely, Shine reports.

The staff at Shanghai Zoo in Changning district and Shanghai Wild Animal Park in Pudong New Area have prepared special cooling treats for animals, such as watermelons and ice blocks.

Air conditioning is also being blasted to help keep the animals from overheating. In addition, more cold water and fresh fruits and veggies are being provided. Xing Guang and He Feng – the two male giant pandas that arrived in Shanghai last month from Chengdu – have been basking in the air conditioning in recent days and taking outdoor strolls around 6am.

Air conditioning is also being used on animals like frogs, tortoises and lizards. South American tapirs, Yang Yang and Fu Fu, are being cooled down with electric fans, fresh fruit, ice cream and a swimming pool. Hippos and giraffes are being fed watermelons and have giant ice cubes in their houses. Elephants, amphibians and reptiles also get regular water sprays and watermelons. The alpacas have had their coats shaved and are also getting spray downs.

Suffice it to say, zookeepers are going to great lengths to ensure the animals stay healthy and cool during the summer season.
