Shanghai has been in the grip of sweltering heat for over a week now. Thankfully, the mercury will be on the decline starting this Thursday, reports Shine.

Ever since Shanghai bid farewell to the plum rain season, the weather has gone haywire. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau released a whopping seven yellow alerts (when the high surpasses 35 degrees Celsius) and two orange alerts (when the high surpasses 37 degrees Celsius) for heat wave during the past seven days. To make matters worse, residents have also had to cope with scattered thunderstorms.

The extreme heat continues today. Another orange alert for heat wave was activated around noon and the highest temperature reached 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) again, with a ‘feels like’ temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Accuweather. The consistent scorching weather has become a trial for all Shanghairen, both mentally and physically.

If it’s any comfort, the subtropical high pressure – the source of the continuous heat – has started moving north. As a result, the temperature will start to go down this week. On Friday, the mercury is slated to drop to 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and the temperatures will hover around 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 degrees Fahrenheit) this weekend and next week. Here is a glimpse of the weather for the following days:

In addition to the brutal summer heat, it is also typhoon season. While typhoons do help cool things down in the city, there will be less typhoons this year due to the effects of El Niño, according to the bureau. At this time last year, the city was under the impact of the 12th typhoon of 2018. However, merely six typhoons have generated this year and none of them have posed a direct threat to Shanghai.
