In case you haven’t heard, foreigners living in Shanghai can now register their residence online instead of making the trek all the way to the police station. It turns out the online option is not only a very welcome change for those of us living in Shanghai, but it's saving a massive amount of time for the city's police officers, Shine reports.

The online residence registration system was implemented on October 25. Since then, 4,500 foreigners have filled out the online form instead of going to the police station. Shanghai is the first city in China to offer an online residence registration option.

The form is currently available in both Chinese and English. However, it will be available in Japanese and Korean soon. You can register your residence through this website: crjzndg.gaj.sh.gov.cn/24hr. Alternately, you can scan the QR code below:

According to the law, foreigners must register their residence within 24 of arriving in the country. Anyone staying in a hotel does not need to register.

Those registering online will need to provide their e-mail address, address in Shanghai, a photo of the information page of their passport, and arrival and departure dates. Once the form is filled out, the user should receive a confirmation via text within a few minutes.

If there are any issues, it's necessary to pay a visit to the police station to register.
